ETC: Fashion, PR 101
Tanglaw University Center had their first ETC get-together last Saturday, July 24, 2010. ETC stands for Engaging Talks on Culture. It’s a series of talks happening every second and fourth Saturday of the month. The focus of ETC this year is women in different professional fields. This brings me to talk about the guest last Saturday. The guest was Clarisse Ong, a graduate of Columbia University, Canada and a member of GUTSY, a fashion advocacy group.
It’s interesting how the speaker said in the get-together that fashion style covers not only clothing and accessories, but also includes personal hygiene, etiquette and manners. She aptly said that our fashion style is our personal PR.
So if you want people to get a good idea of you, dress and act smartly! This does not mean dressing all covered up or wearing baggy tops and pants, rather, it means thinking about what you wear, which make-up and accessory are appropriate for the occasion, which top matches with which bottom, which clothes match our body type, etc.
She also reminded us of the basic thing about good fashion, which is taking care of your personal hygiene. With good hygiene, such as a clean face and a well-combed or well-kept hair, we won’t need a lot of auxiliary fashion items. Another tip she told us was to chose clothes with basic colors, in that way, you can mix and match them easily. So really, fashion is not about trends, but it is more about appropriate style.
I’m grateful that I attended this get-together because it helped me come up with my fashion style equation: simplicity + propriety = beauty.
This I learned from no less than a very credible speaker.
See you again in the next ETC on August 14, Saturday, 1:30-2:30pm. The guest is Ms. Noreen Bautista and she will talk about Social Entrepreneurship.
