To start the year right, ORI (Optional Religious Instruction) organized a new year treat party for all the ORI-Girls from 1st year to 4th year last January 4,2011 at the ASTB Hall, Philippine Science High School-Diliman campus.

Many girls attended and most of the volunteers came. It was not just a party for the girls- food, games, and trivia. Lorie Anda, the ORI in-charge, gave a pep talk on the real essence of celebrating the Epiphany of our Lord.

She mentioned important points for the girls to remember using the analogy of the gifts of the Magi. Moreover, the new year treat party was an opportunity for each of the ORI group to brainstorm on an activity they are willing to organize for everyone. This will be held on specific dates in between January and February 2011. This way, the girls will foster sense of responsibility and involvement in any ORI activity since they will be the ones who will be doing the preparation down to the implementation of whatever activity they will come up with. Everyone was excited for the line up of activities which will start on January 20, 2011.

Conversations with a young writer

Miro Capili, a second year Political Science student of UP Diliman, visited Tanglaw last Saturday to share her experiences writing in well-recognized literary works. At the ripe old age of 17, Miro has already won three Palanca awards to date.

She related how she developed the passion for writing, that it actually started when she was only in preschool, and how her dad, a painter, encouraged her to further refine her writing skills. True enough, Miro read Filipino literary works by Palanca winners even as a young girl.

Miro said she decided to take up Political Science instead of the rather expected Creative Writing since she came from a debating background that made her interested in current affairs and societal concerns. Besides, she thinks a degree in government studies can broaden her horizons and widen the scope of her writing interests.

What was remarkable about our short encounter with Miro was how much she emphasized what she maintains as the purpose of her writing—service to others.

“I first thought I could only write for myself, but I realized that people could actually read your works and be positively influenced by them,” she said.

Miro also explained that such attitude spares her from the pressure of just having to write to reap awards.

She ended the get-together with an advice for the non-writers along the lines of: “When you write, don’t think you’re actually writing, because it is supposed to be innate and not forced.” She also advised not to stop once the habit is there. #
