Meaningful engagement. This, in a nutshell, is the message of Ms. Camille Diola, New Media and Web Administrator of the University of Asia and the Pacific in a talk last 23 July. Dubbed “Social Media and Gen-y”, Camille made clever use of the Woody vs. Buzz conflict in the famous animation Toy Story to present two sides of the issue on social media.
Woody, the first and oldest toy of Andy, stands for the traditional media while Buzz, the new toy in the block, represents the new communication technologies.

People tend to think we must make a choice between the two. But synergy is the better option.
Optimum use of social media requires recognizing its role and its proper place. Judicious use means being discriminating about content uploaded. They have to contribute to general knowledge and well-being, by being in line with the truth. And, on line activity must not replace nor overtake real world and real time activities and above all, relationships.
Statistics and our personal experiences show that social media does not show signs of slowing down, so the best is, to ride the wave,“to infinity and beyond. “
